Are Starburst halal?
Starburst is a case where the answer really did change, and where it changed depends on which country you are in.
Most Starburst contain gelatin and are not halal unless certified. The chew comes from gelatin, which is why it is harder to remove than from a hard-shell sweet. UK Starburst were reformulated to be gelatin-free and are labelled suitable for vegetarians. US and several other markets still use beef gelatin. Check for a vegetarian mark or the gelatin declaration on your pack.
Why gelatin is central to a chew
The texture that defines Starburst, dense and elastic and slow-melting, comes from gelatin. Unlike a hard-shell sweet where gelatin is optional, a chew's whole character depends on the gelling system, which is why reformulating is a real technical project rather than a swap.
When manufacturers do remove it, they typically move to a blend of modified starch, pectin and gum arabic, and the texture changes noticeably.
Are UK and US Starburst different?
| Market | Gelatin | Status |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Reformulated gelatin-free; vegetarian-labelled | Check pack for the mark |
| United States | Beef gelatin | Not halal unless certified |
| Other markets | Varies | Check the pack |
On US beef gelatin specifically: "beef" resolves the species question but not the slaughter question. Industrial beef gelatin comes from ordinary hides and bone, and the cattle will not have been slaughtered Islamically. In the majority position that makes it not halal. See is gelatin halal.
The other things worth checking
- Colourings. Red and pink varieties may use carmine (E120) in some markets.
- Glazing agents. Some chews carry a light coating; check whether it is carnauba (E903) or shellac (E904).
- Fats. The chew includes a fat component, usually palm or hydrogenated vegetable oil, but worth confirming it is not animal-derived.
- Emulsifiers. E471 appears in some formulations.
How to check any chewy sweet
Chews, taffies and fruit chews as a category are the highest-probability place to find gelatin outside gummy sweets. A quick routine:
- Look for a vegetarian or vegan mark first. This is the single fastest resolver, and it also rules out carmine and shellac.
- If no mark, read the ingredient list for "gelatine", "gelatin" or "E441".
- If in doubt, scan the barcode. The app flags declared gelatin and shows the country of origin.
Which chewy sweets are halal?
- UK-market Starburst. Vegetarian-labelled and gelatin-free
- Pectin-set fruit chews. Several brands use pectin as standard
- Vegan chews and taffies. A vegan mark resolves gelatin, carmine and shellac together
- Turkish delight, wine gums, some fruit pastilles. Traditionally set with starch or pectin

Frequently asked questions
Do Starburst have gelatin?
In most markets, yes, because the chewy texture depends on it. UK Starburst were reformulated to be gelatin-free and carry a vegetarian label. US Starburst use beef gelatin. Check the ingredient list or the vegetarian mark on your specific pack.
Are US Starburst halal because they use beef gelatin?
Not in the majority position. Beef gelatin is halal only if the cattle were slaughtered according to Islamic requirements, and industrial beef gelatin comes from ordinary hides and bone. Without halal certification, the slaughter method cannot be established.
Are UK Starburst halal?
UK Starburst are made without gelatin and are labelled suitable for vegetarians, which resolves the main objection. They are not formally halal certified, so check the pack for the vegetarian mark and read the colourings if that matters to you.
